Answers to your common questions
FAQs
Do you only offer sessions online?
Yes, for now I only offer phone or video sessions and there is no time frame of when I will begin offer in person sessions but that may change in the future.
How long are your sessions?
They are typically 50-minutes long but can be shorter or longer depending on your needs and my availability.
What is your cancellation policy?
I have a 48 hour cancellation policy. However, If I know ahead of time that we might need to cancel or reschedule, I don't charge the fee. And, we can always discuss each situation.
Do I have to fit every identity or speciality you list to have therapy with you?
No, everyone is welcome. You don’t need to fit all or any of the identities listed on my website. My website is there to give you a little more understanding of my style and specialties but I work with a variety of other identities and experiences not listed.
How will I know if we are a good fit?
What I think is most important is that you are finding the support you need. I offer a free 15-20 minute consultation to help us determine if we are a good fit. If you feel that it may not be a good fit, I can reach out to other colleagues who may be better suited to your needs.
What is the first session like?
Our first intake session is 50 minutes. And, the first 1-3 sessions will focus on getting to know you, learning more about what brings you into therapy, and developing your therapy goals. I extend our first meeting so that we have time to go over logistical information, such as HIPPA, consent forms, and other policies. During the second half of our meeting I will typically ask questions to learn more about your identities, interests, previous therapeutic experiences, family history, present concerns, past mental health concerns, your home life, and other information relevant to therapy.
Can we still meet if I don’t live in the Bay area?
Yes, I offer phone or video sessions. I'm licensed in the state of California and I am able to work with people all over California.
How long will I be in therapy?
I believe many factors influence the amount of time we spend in therapy. I like to tell clients, "If you have experienced a large stressor, resulting in suffering for a decade or even the last few years- I can't say that you will be ending therapy after a few months." We all come to therapy for different reasons and for that reason the length will look different for everyone and there isn’t a set length. However, I understand that most people may not stay in therapy for years due to different circumstances like financial hardship. And, those conversations about circumstances are always welcome in our meetings. I like to encourage people to talk about their needs and expectations for therapy. Many people begin by meeting weekly, then transition to bi-weekly, and eventually on a once-monthly basis. Ultimately it is your decision to stop or pause therapy when you need to.
Do you prescribe medication ?
I do not prescribe medication because I am not a medical professional (i.e., psychiatrist, medical doctor). But should you be interested, I'm available to discuss the pros and cons of medication with you. And, If you're interested in seeking medication I may offer some referrals for you depending on your needs.
Do you accept insurance?
I'm not currently accepting insurance, but I am happy to provide you with a receipt of services ("superbill") in order to submit reimbursement claims to your insurance company. Reimbursements vary, so I encourage clients to inquire about out of network mental health benefits they might have to support access to those benefits.
Can I use my FSA?
Yes, you can. Flexible spending accounts (FSA) allow you to set aside pre-tax money for out of pocket health costs, and you can apply them to your mental health care. If you aren’t sure if you have FSA I encourage you to ask your employer.
Do I need to be in confidential space to do remote therapy with you?
When we meet remotely, I will be in my remote home office. But, you can be anywhere you like in California. If the situation you're in is distracting or it’s hard to hear me, we can talk about our options in the moment. If the situation seems to be or becomes unsafe or uncomfortable for you, we can talk through that in the moment and I will offer you support.
Will our sessions be confidential?
What you share during our sessions is completely confidential. However, there are a few exceptions: Imminent danger to yourself or others, as well as child, elder, or dependent adult abuse, or court orders. We will go over all of these limits to confidentiality during your first intake visit, and if one of these situations arises we will discuss how to move forward together.
